Ohanaeze Urges Igbo Youths to Refrain from Protesting Against Tinubu’s Government

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo, a prominent socio-cultural group in Nigeria, has cautioned Igbo youths against joining any nationwide protest against President Bola Tinubu-led federal government amidst the current economic hardship in the country.

The President-General of Ohanaeze, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, warned that Igbo youths are often targeted and prosecuted with serious charges when they participate in protests against the Nigerian government.

He emphasized the need for a more strategic approach to address the current economic crisis.

Speaking in Enugu, Iwuanyanwu described the current economic situation in Nigeria as unfortunate and announced plans to convene a meeting of top Igbo economists and experts to devise a plan to overcome the hardships.

He also highlighted the importance of democracy and the need to avoid military rule in Nigeria.

The Ohanaeze leader emphasized that Igbo youths and youths from other tribes have, at various times, expressed their dissatisfaction with events in the country.

However, he noted that when youths from other tribes are involved in protests, they are usually reprimanded and forgiven, while Igbo youths are often arrested, incarcerated, and even charged for serious offences.

As an example, Iwuanyanwu mentioned the arrest and detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, which has caused significant problems for Igbos.

He pointed out that many Igbos, including governors, lawmakers, religious leaders, traditional rulers, and business leaders, have pleaded for Kanu’s release without success.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo has urged Igbo youths to refrain from joining any protests against President Tinubu’s government, as they may be targeted and face serious consequences.

The group plans to work on a strategic plan to address the current economic crisis and emphasizes the importance of democracy and avoiding military rule in Nigeria.
