Nigeria govt urges Israel and Hamas to end hostilities

Nigeria has expressed its deep concern over the latest outbreak of violence between Israel and Hamas and called for a peaceful resolution of the conflict through dialogue.

The Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf M. Tuggar, issued a statement on Saturday, October 8, 2023, calling for both sides to exercise restraint, prioritise the safety of civilians, and give room for humanitarian considerations.

“The Federal Government of Nigeria is deeply concerned about the outbreak of hostilities between Israel and Hamas in the early hours of Saturday.

The Nigerian government also called for an immediate de-escalation and ceasefire and urged both parties to resume negotiations for a lasting solution to the decades-long conflict.

The statement came after Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel on Saturday morning, firing thousands of rockets and sending militants across the border. Israel responded with airstrikes and ground operations, declaring a state of war and vowing to destroy Hamas’ infrastructure in Gaza.

The conflict has drawn international attention and condemnation, with many countries and organisations calling for an end to the violence and a resumption of peace talks.
