FRSC seeks approval to carry firearms amid security challenges

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has requested that the federal government grant its personnel permission to carry firearms in the course of their duties. The corps said this was necessary to protect its staff from attacks by some road users or criminals who exploit the security situation in the country.

On Saturday, the Corps Marshal, Dauda Biu,who was represented by a Deputy Corps Marshal, Shehu Zaki, appealed to the federal government to allow the FRSC to carry firearms while performing their duties. He made this plea during the inauguration of 1,762 new members of the corps who had undergone a four-month basic training at the NATRAC in Kontagora, Niger State. He said that the FRSC had been seeking approval to use arms since 1992, but it had not received a positive response from the government.
