Chelsea rout Burnley 4-1 to continue their resurgence

Chelsea came from behind to thrash Burnley 4-1 at Turf Moor on Saturday and record their second consecutive win in the Premier League. The Blues, who had lost three of their first six league games, showed their quality and resilience under new manager Mauricio Pochettino, who took over from Frank Lampard in September.

Burnley took a surprise lead in the 15th minute when French teenager Wilson Odobert scored his first Premier League goal with a low shot from the edge of the box. Chelsea were stunned by the hosts’ opener, but gradually grew into the game and created several chances to equalise.

The visitors finally got their reward in the 42nd minute when Ameen Al-Dakhil turned Raheem Sterling’s cross into his own net under pressure from Nicolas Jackson. It was a cruel blow for Burnley, who had defended well until then, but Chelsea deserved their leveller.

The second half was a different story, as Chelsea dominated possession and territory and put Burnley under constant pressure. The Blues took the lead in the 50th minute when Sterling won a penalty after being fouled by Vitinho in the box. Cole Palmer, who joined Chelsea from Manchester City in August, calmly slotted home his first goal for the club from the spot.

Sterling then got on the scoresheet himself in the 65th minute with a clinical finish from Conor Gallagher’s pass, after a swift counter-attack by Chelsea. The England winger, who was left out of Gareth Southgate’s squad for the upcoming matches against Australia and Italy, proved his point with an impressive performance.

Chelsea added a fourth goal in the 75th minute when Jackson headed home from a corner by Palmer, capping off a fine display by the Blues. Jackson, who has been linked with a move to Real Madrid, showed his quality and versatility by playing as a striker, a winger, and a midfielder during the game.

Burnley had no answer to Chelsea’s onslaught and could have conceded more goals if not for some saves by goalkeeper Nick Pope. The Clarets remain in the relegation zone with only four points from eight games, while Chelsea climb to 11th place with 11 points.

Pochettino praised his team’s performance and said he was happy with the progress they had made since he took charge. He said, “I think we played very well today. We showed our character and our quality. We were patient, and we created a lot of chances. We scored four goals, and we could have scored more. I’m very pleased with the attitude and the mentality of the players.”
