Navy captures 50 sacks of cannabis priced at N70 million in Badagry

On Sunday, in Badagry, Lagos, the Nigerian Navy’s Forward Operating Base (FOB) confiscated 50 sacks of cannabis sativa worth N70 million from the Gbethrome area.

Lt.Commander Kelly Umoru, FOB Base Operations Officer, said the staff seized the goods from a half-built building near the beach around 6.30 a.m.

Umoru said the navy agents acted on a tip-off about the location of suspected smugglers in the area.

“As you may remember, on November 9, 2023, the Flag Officer Commanding Western Navy Command Operations, Rear Admiral Mustapha Hussain, launched an operation named’Water Guard’ in line with the Chief of Naval Staff’s directive.

“FOB Badagry on Sunday, Nov. 19, based on reliable human intelligence, raided Gbethrome and found 50 sacks of alleged cannabis sativa hidden in an empty building near the beach.

“Each of the sacks has about 200 packets. The market value of the goods is N70 million,” he said.

Umoru assured that the goods would be handed over to the appropriate organisation for further action.

You may recall that on October 4, the Nigerian Navy in Badagry transferred 27 sacks of cannabis sativa worth N35 million to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The FOB Commanding Officer, Navy Capt. Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, said the agents seized the goods on September 29 at Pako Beach in Badagry.
