Lagos Assembly Mandates Registration for Market Traders

In an effort to regulate market operations and maintain a healthy business environment, the Lagos State House of Assembly recently announced that market traders in the state must register with the Local Council Development Area (LCDA) before commencing their operations.

This decision was made after a peaceful protest and petition from the Orilowo perishable goods marketers to the House of Assembly over their inability to be recognized as Orilowo Food Market under Agboyi-Ketu LCDA.

The House Committee on Local Government Administration, led by Mr. Sanni Okanlawon, read the report on the floor of the House, explaining the stance between both parties that led to the recommendations.

The committee recommended that the Orilowo Perishable Foods Market must not operate until the traders are registered for such purpose by Agboyi-Ketu LCDA.

Furthermore, the committee suggested that the market should approach the LCDA with necessary documentation for official registration, and once all requirements are met, the LCDA should register the market.

Presiding over the sitting, Deputy Speaker Mrs. Meranda Mojisola resolved to adopt the recommendations of the Committee on Local Government Administration, Chieftaincy Affairs, and Rural Development as the resolution of the House.

In another development, the Lagos State House of Assembly also adopted the recommendation of the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, Public Petitions, and LASIEC, asking the Chairman of Yaba LCDA to ensure peace among Community Development Areas (CDAs) and the entire community.

The lawmakers resolved to adopt the recommendations of the Committee as follows: that the chairman of the Yaba LCDA should inaugurate the newly elected executives of the Karimu Williams CDA, having followed due process in the conduct of its election in line with the State Government directives.

The House also resolved that the Agriculture, Natural Resources, Rural, and Social Community Development Department of all Local Governments and Local Council Development Areas should be more alive and proactive in their duties in respect to CDA administrations.

Additionally, the CDA law CAP C10 Vol. 3 laws of Lagos State 2015 will be looked into with a view to making the CDAs and their administrations more transparent.

This move by the Lagos State House of Assembly is aimed at fostering a more organized and well-regulated market environment, ensuring that all traders in the state operate within the confines of the law and contribute positively to the local economy.
