FCT VIO to Deploy AI for Seamless Traffic Management

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) has announced plans to deploy Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance the free flow of traffic in the city centre.

The move comes as part of the agency’s efforts to improve road safety and ensure that motorists adhere to traffic rules and regulations.

Mr. Kalu Emetu, the Head of Public Relations and Enlightenment at DRTS, recently shared this development with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He explained that AI technology, which is capable of thinking and acting like a human, will complement the efforts of DRTS personnel in monitoring traffic and enforcing road safety measures.

However, the implementation of the AI system has been delayed due to the incomplete arrangements with the agency’s partners, Huawei and Chit-Up.

Once these arrangements are finalized, the project is expected to be completed in a short time, resulting in a seamless traffic flow in the FCT, especially in the city.

Emetu also highlighted that the DRTS had already mounted the necessary equipment and started recording traffic activities in the targeted areas.

He further emphasized that traffic offenders would be fined for their violations, including those who broke the traffic rules during the test run.

The agency will contact offenders to inform them of when, where, and how they violated the traffic rules.

With the introduction of AI technology, the interface between DRTS personnel and motorists is expected to decrease significantly.

This will allow the agency to focus more on traffic monitoring and ensuring a clean city with free movement for all.
