Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu Advocates for Higher Salaries for Nigerian Lawmakers

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, argued that the current salaries of Nigerian federal lawmakers are insufficient in relation to the responsibilities of their office.

Kalu made these comments on Channels TV on February 26, 2024, while dismissing calls for a reduction in their salaries.

Kalu explained that the salary of a Nigerian lawmaker is separate from their allowance, which is intended to fund their work in their respective constituencies.

He emphasized that allowances have specific purposes and cannot be used for other reasons without consequences.

“The salary of the National Assembly is a far cry from what is supposed to be,” said Kalu.

“Even if we were to reduce it by 50% or 80%, it would not impact what Nigerian lawmakers should be earning, which is not in line with the economic situation of the country.”

Kalu further highlighted the various expenses that lawmakers incur, such as transportation, maintaining constituency offices, and employing aides to fulfill their mandates.

He suggested that a salary adjustment could be considered if it contributes to moving Nigeria forward.

While acknowledging the current economic climate in Nigeria, including inflation, Kalu expressed concern that the current salaries of lawmakers are not sufficient for them to effectively carry out their responsibilities.

He maintained that any changes to their salaries should be based on the needs of the constituents and the country’s economic situation.

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu believes that the current salaries of Nigerian lawmakers are not commensurate with the job responsibilities they face.

He advocates for a review of the compensation structure to better align with the economic realities of the country and the needs of their constituents.
