Falana Urges Adequate Security for Protesters Ahead of Nationwide Demonstration

Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to ensure adequate security for demonstrators ahead of a nationwide protest organized by the National Labour Congress (NLC).

The NLC is set to hold a demonstration on February 27, 2024, to address the concerns of Nigerian workers.

Falana emphasized the importance of protecting the rights of the protesters and warned the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) not to repress the organized labor or anyone else demonstrating against the dire circumstances facing the nation.

He cited the Police Establishment Act 2020, which provides that where a person or organization notifies the police of their intention to hold a public meeting, rally, or procession on a public highway or in a place where the public has access, the police officer responsible for the area shall mobilize personnel to provide security.

The NLC announced the nationwide protest on February 16, 2024, in response to the economic woes facing the country.

The demonstration is scheduled to take place on February 27 and 28, after a 14-day deadline for the federal government to address the matter had passed.

Falana’s call for adequate security during the protest highlights the importance of protecting the rights of citizens to express their grievances and concerns peacefully.

It also underscores the need for a balanced approach by law enforcement agencies in maintaining order while respecting the rights of citizens.

As the date of the demonstration approaches, it remains to be seen how the government and law enforcement agencies will respond to the call for adequate security and protection for the protesters.
