Police Arrest Nine Suspects in Kano for Illegal Forex Operations

On illegal foreign exchange activities, the Kano State Police Command, in collaboration with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigeria Customs Service, has arrested nine suspected foreign exchange hawkers in Kano State, Nigeria.

The operation took place on February 26, 2024, and targeted locations where FOREX transactions were being carried out in the state.

The joint operation led to the arrest of 31 individuals, out of which 22 were released due to a lack of evidence.

The remaining nine suspects were charged to court for prosecution and were found with various foreign currencies, a POS machine, and mobile devices.

The Kano State Police Commissioner, CP Mohammed Usaini Gumel, emphasized that the objective of the operation was to stabilize the foreign exchange market in the country and not to target legitimate Bureau de Change operators.

The Commissioner of Police also urged individuals and business operators within the financial sector to operate within the confines of the law and obtain the necessary licenses to avoid engaging in illegal activities.

He stressed that a transparent and accountable financial environment is crucial for the well-being of Kano State residents.

The Kano State Police Command is committed to ensuring that illegal financial activities are not tolerated and that those engaging in such practices will face the full consequences of the law.
