CSO Urges Caution in Kano State Emirate Law Review: A Call for Responsible Action

The Advocacy Centre for Development, also known as Society and the Future, has written an open letter to the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, cautioning against tampering with the state emirate law.

The CSO has urged the assembly to be mindful of its actions in the Kano State emirate law review, emphasizing the need for responsible decision-making.

The letter comes in the wake of the recent political atmosphere in Kano State, where the state has recently escaped a tense situation following the 2023 gubernatorial elections.

The CSO believes that the state is in dire need of a period of calm and stability, and any hasty decision on the emirate law could lead to further tension and polarization of the traditional institutions in the state.

In the letter, the CSO highlighted the importance of the Kano State House of Assembly being cautious in its actions, as the state is connected to other states in Northern Nigeria, and any social, economic, or political decision in Kano State has a tendency to affect the residents of other states either positively or negatively.

The group also pointed out that the atmosphere is not conducive to contemplate the abolition of the additional emirates, and that a comprehensive review of the state’s Emirate Law is necessary to restore the once unrivalled prestige of the old Kano Emirate.

The letter serves as a reminder to the Kano State House of Assembly to be responsible in its actions and to prioritize the well-being of the people of Kano State and Northern Nigeria at large.

It is hoped that the assembly will heed the advice of the CSO and make a decision that is in the best interest of the people.
