AGF Urges Judiciary, Legislature to Strengthen Synergy for Rule of Law

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, called on the judiciary and the legislature to strengthen their synergy for the betterment of Nigeria.

He emphasized the importance of the rule of law and the need for the three arms of government to work together in a democratic setting.

During a refresher course for Judges and Khadis in Abuja, Fagbemi stressed that the principle of separation of powers is a fundamental aspect of Nigeria’s government.

However, he also mentioned that there must be cooperation and collaboration between the three arms to avoid arbitrary excesses and ensure the smooth functioning of the government.

Fagbemi urged the judiciary to reject attempts to manipulate or employ it for personal benefit, while also encouraging the courts to review government processes and actions that are not in line with the law or the advancement of society.

He emphasized the importance of an independent and efficient court system as a cornerstone of the rule of law.

The Minister also highlighted the role of the legislature in passing laws to support the executive’s work and initiating developmental bills.

He called on the legislature to amend existing laws that might be hindering the government’s performance.

Fagbemi assured that his office would ensure the enforcement of court decisions and the review of policies and governmental processes to align with the law.

He also stated that his office is available to address any issues that might inhibit the judiciary from carrying out its constitutional functions.

The Attorney General of the Federation’s call for a stronger synergy between the executive, the legislature, and the judiciary is a significant step towards ensuring the rule of law and the effective functioning of Nigeria’s government.
