Former Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has advised his counterpart from Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, to cooperate with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and not bring disgrace to former governors.
Ortom made this statement during a thanksgiving service organized by his former appointees to mark his 63rd birthday anniversary at the Regional Headquarters of the Redeemed Christian Church of God in Makurdi.
Ortom emphasized that it is inappropriate for former governors to evade the invitation of the anti-graft agency and try to flee, as it would bring shame and disgrace.
He urged former Governor Yahaya Bello to face the EFCC and clarify any issues related to his tenure, stating that the EFCC are human beings doing their job and that there are laws in place to protect individuals.
The former governor also acknowledged the challenges and restrictions of being in power for eight years, noting that it is not an easy task and that prayer is crucial for leaders, including the President, Governors, and other political office holders.
He admitted that not every decision he made during his tenure would have been favorable to everyone, and that leaders are prone to making mistakes as they are not perfect.
As Ortom reflects on his time in office and the challenges of leadership, he emphasizes the importance of accountability and the role of prayer in supporting leaders.
His message to former Governor Yahaya Bello serves as a reminder that cooperation with authorities and transparency in governance are essential for maintaining the integrity of former governors and the political system as a whole.
