Kalu Urges Synergy for Effective Constitution Review, Meeting Nigerians’ Yearnings

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has called for a collaborative effort between the Senate and House Committees on Constitution Review and their respective secretariats and consultants to ensure a successful outcome for the ongoing constitution review exercise.
Speaking at a joint retreat of the secretariats and consultants to the Senate and House committees, Kalu emphasized the importance of synergy to drive the task to outcomes that meet and satisfy the desires and yearnings of Nigerians.
Kalu, who chairs the House Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, urged the stakeholders to review previous amendment proposals that were either not passed by the National/State Assemblies or were not assented to by the President.
He suggested that these issues be re-introduced with a plan to address reservations that led to their rejection.
Noting that the constitutional alteration is a continuous process, Kalu highlighted the importance of engaging all Nigerians to empower the legislature in evolving a constitution that addresses contentious issues such as State Police and Special Seats for Women.
Kalu commended the stakeholders for their national sacrifice and patriotism, emphasizing that the 10th Assembly is building upon the legacies of previous Assemblies, which resulted in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assenting to 18 Constitution amendment Bills in the 9th Assembly.
He assured that committee members in both the Senate and House of Representatives will engage President Tinubu on various issues.

Kalu encouraged the submission of memoranda from all stakeholders and the general public to ensure a comprehensive and inclusive constitution review process that addresses the yearnings of Nigerians.
