UNILAG Hosts International Communications Festival: A Celebration of Growth and Progress

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) Mass Communication Alumni Association (UMCAA) is gearing up for a grand celebration as they prepare to host the highly anticipated International Communications Festival from April 16-18 2024.

This homecoming event will bring together graduates of the department and the university community to share ideas and discuss ways to improve the communication profession, ultimately benefiting the country as a whole.

This three-day event holds special significance as it marks the recent unbundling of Mass Communication by the federal government, elevating the department to a faculty.

The festival will serve as a platform for graduates to contribute their knowledge and experience to the growth of the newly established faculty.

Wale Williams, the President of the Association, emphasized the importance of this gathering:

“As the number one mass communication department in Nigeria, we are all coming back home to our alma mater to mingle, share thoughts, celebrate, bring our experience to bear and most importantly, see how best we can continue to support our department, which is about to be upgraded.”

The festival promises to be a rich and engaging experience for all attendees.

The second edition of the UMCAA Entrepreneurship Competition will offer three winning teams and their companies financial assistance for business startups, while the three-day exhibitions will showcase the department’s products.

Notable speakers and industry experts will grace the event, including renowned producer Remi Ogunpitan and Hollywood filmmaker Ose Oyamendan, who will headline the first day’s Town meets Gown colloquia.

On day two, veteran Managing Director of Independent Newspapers, Mr. Ted Iwere, will share insights on business, followed by a talk on New Media & National Orientation by Mallam Lanre Issa Onilu, Director General of the National Orientation Agency.

The third day will feature the 6th edition of the Association’s Distinguished Lecture Series, with The Cable Online publisher, Mr. Simon Kolawole, addressing the burning topic of ‘The Dilemma between Journalism & Activism.’

Invitations are being extended to all communication institutions in Nigeria to join the event virtually, fostering an inclusive environment for the exchange of ideas and perspectives.

Students at the department will have the unique opportunity to engage in speed mentoring sessions with experienced members of the association, further enriching their educational journey.

The International Communications Festival at UNILAG promises to be a celebration of growth and progress, as well as a platform for meaningful discussions on the future of the communication profession in Nigeria.
