Troops of the Nigerian Army, supported by the Nigerian Air Force, have rescued Mrs. Amina Abubakar, widow of the late Major General Rabe Abubakar, following a sustained offensive against bandits in Katsina State.
Troops of Operation FASAN YAMMA carried out the successful rescue during a search-and-rescue mission that intensified pressure on criminal gangs operating in the area.
According to the Defence Headquarters, troops engaged the kidnappers at Tunga Village, forcing the bandits to abandon their captive and flee as security forces closed in on their hideout.
Military authorities disclosed that the bandits shot Mrs. Abubakar before escaping. She was subsequently recovered by troops and evacuated for urgent medical attention.
Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, confirmed the development, stating that the victim was immediately transferred to a military medical facility where she is currently receiving treatment.
He said Mrs. Abubakar was responding positively to medical care and assured that the military would continue to provide all necessary support to aid her recovery.
"The rescued victim was promptly evacuated to a military medical facility and is responding well to treatment," Uba stated.
The Defence Headquarters also reaffirmed its commitment to tracking down those responsible for the abduction, vowing to sustain ongoing operations against bandits and other criminal elements threatening peace and security in the region.
The rescue marks a significant breakthrough in efforts to secure Mrs. Abubakar's freedom following the tragic abduction that claimed the life of her husband, the late Major General Rabe Abubakar.
The retired senior military officer reportedly died while in captivity after he and his wife were abducted by bandits several weeks ago, sparking widespread concern and renewed security operations aimed at rescuing the remaining victim.
Military authorities said the operation underscores the Armed Forces' determination to combat kidnapping, banditry and other violent crimes across the country while ensuring that perpetrators are brought to justice.
