Cooking gas prices have started sliding downward across Nigeria after climbing sharply due to supply shortages in recent weeks. Checks at retail outlets in Abuja revealed that prices have fallen between N1,450 and N1,500 per kilogram from the earlier N1,700 charged at AA Shafa and Ranoil in Dutse and Gwarimpa.

Retailers in Kubwa, Dawaki, Bwari, Lugbe and other parts of the capital are now selling liquefied petroleum gas at N1,650 to N1,700 per kilogram, down from highs of N2,000 per kg. This represents a drop of between N200 and N350 per kilogram over the last few weeks.

At the wholesale level, depot owners are moving LPG at N1,065 to N1,100 per litre for every kilogram sold. The improvement stems from enhanced supply reaching Nigerian markets after a period of constraint.

Yet the reductions haven't brought prices to the N1,000 to N1,200 per kilogram range that the sector had targeted by May 27, 2026. Marketers had been directed to ramp up LPG imports to strengthen domestic availability and stabilise costs.

Chinedu Ukadike, spokesman for the Oil and Gas Suppliers Association of Nigeria, and Taofeek Lawal of Nigerian Independent Petroleum Company Plc attributed the recent price spike to seasonal factors, surging demand and supply gaps. The officials pointed to these structural challenges as the root cause of the volatility that consumers experienced.
