By Spence Friday Idighri,

A prominent Chief in Idjerhe Kingdom, Ethiope West Local Government Area of Delta State, Chief James Obriki has commended the governor of the State, Senator Arthur Ifeanyi Okowa over the appointment and subsequent inauguration of HRM, King Obukohwo Monday Arthur Whiskey, Udurhie1, the Ovie of Idjerhe Kingdom as member of the State Traditional Rulers’ Council.

He said the gesture by the governor was a thing of joy to the entire kingdom as it was coming less than three weeks after the governor awarded a contract for the construction of the road leading to the Palace of the Ovie of the Kingdom.

Chief Obriki who said the Kingdom will forever be grateful to the governor, equally use the opportunity to draw the attention of His Excellency to the lack of institution of higher learning in the area. He said such is urgently needed to absorb the multitude of secondary school leavers who are hungry for University education.

The outspoken Chief who disclosed this in an interview with our correspondent in Asaba immediately after the inauguration of the Idjerhe monarch equally advised the young ones in the Kingdom to imbibe the virtue of hard work and jettison the idea of the get rich quick syndrome which he said will do them more harm than good.

He said “when we were growing up in the 60s, there were virtues that were inculcated in us. These include; hard work, respect for elders, perseverance, punctuality, humility, love and many others. But today you will observe that all these have disappeared and what is in vogue now is this spirit of getting rich quick syndrome that has virtually possessed and taken over the younger ones that are painfully within the age bracket of 14 to 25years.”

On those to be held responsible for this moral decadence in society, he said almost everybody is involved one way or the other but specifically put the blame more on the doorstep of parents and the society. He said parents have failed in their God-given duty of proper upbringing while society today worship ill-gotten wealth not minding its source.

While proffering a solution he said parents, community leaders, the church/mosque, government, traditional rulers and others must live up to their responsibilities so as to nip in the bud this growing monster in our society.
