Over fifty corps members in the Warri Zonal Area participated in a training programme on Tuesday aimed at enhancing their teaching skills. The initiative, organized by the Tompolo Foundation in collaboration with the Delta State National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), seeks to equip corps members with essential pedagogical techniques for effective classroom engagement.

Speaking at the official launch, the Chairman and Founder of the Tompolo Foundation, High Chief Government Ekpemupolo, emphasized the foundation’s dedication to promoting quality education. "Education remains the foundation of social transformation, and teachers play a crucial role in shaping the future of our society," he stated.

Ekpemupolo, represented by Dr. Paul Bebenimibo, noted that corps members serve as a bridge for the shortage of teachers in rural and riverine areas but often lack the necessary training to teach effectively. "This is why we partnered with the Delta NYSC to equip these young teachers with fundamental skills that will inspire critical thinking among students," he explained. He added that the foundation has been supporting corps members with stipends, accommodation, and other incentives to encourage their work in remote communities.

The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mrs. Rose Ezewu, commended the initiative and urged other organizations to follow the Tompolo Foundation’s example. Represented by Chief Ejiroghene Erifevieme, she expressed hope that the training would significantly impact both corps members and students in Delta State.

Also speaking, Chief MacDonald Igbaduwei praised the Tompolo Foundation for investing in corps members’ development, noting that the training would sharpen their teaching skills and make learning more engaging for students.

During the event, Dr. Oghenevwede Oyovwi delivered a lecture titled "Pedagogical Skills: A Key Imperative for Enhancing Quality Education in Nigeria." He highlighted the benefits of the training, including increased teacher confidence, better classroom management, and improved community engagement. He also commended the foundation and NYSC for their commitment to improving education in rural areas.

The Director of Education Projects for the Tompolo Foundation, Dr. Job Bebenimibo, announced that the training programme would officially commence on Wednesday, March 18, 2025, with the first batch of 50 corps members.

The NYSC, established on May 22, 1973, during the military regime of General Yakubu Gowon, continues to play a critical role in promoting national unity, self-reliance, and community development.
