A violent clash between farmers and herders in Kwali village, Gwada, in Niger State's Shiroro Local Government Area, has left three people dead and the community in chaos.

The confrontation, which began over a dispute regarding grazing on farmlands, quickly escalated into a deadly conflict, highlighting the ongoing tensions between agricultural and pastoral communities in the region.

The clash was triggered by a disagreement between a local farmer, Salihu Adamu, and a herdsman, Usman Sarki.

Sarki's cattle had reportedly entered Adamu's farm, causing damage to crops and sparking a heated argument between the two. The situation took a deadly turn when Sarki attacked Adamu with a matchet, fatally wounding him.

News of Adamu's death quickly spread through the community, leading to a violent response from his fellow villagers. They reportedly tracked down Sarki and another individual, lynching them in a retaliatory act.

This action, however, only served to further inflame tensions, prompting a swift and destructive response from the herdsmen.

In a retaliatory move, the herdsmen set fire to Kwali village, burning down houses and food barns belonging to the local farmers. The attack has left the community devastated, with significant loss of property and food supplies.

The Niger State Police Command, alerted to the escalating violence, dispatched the Gwada Division patrol team, led by the Divisional Police Officer and supported by local vigilante groups.

Efforts are now underway to restore order and apprehend those responsible for the violence. Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident and stated that investigations are ongoing.

The tragic events in Kwali village underscore the complex and often volatile nature of the interactions between farming and herding communities in Nigeria.

The incident highlights the urgent need for improved conflict resolution mechanisms and increased security measures to prevent such violent clashes in the future.

As the investigation continues, the community of Kwali village, and the wider region, are left to mourn the loss of lives and rebuild their shattered homes.
