Sports minister plans showdown with Peseiro over Super Eagles poor World Cup campaign

Nigeria’s sports minister, John Enoh, has arranged a meeting with Super Eagles head coach, Jose Peseiro, to talk about the team’s bad start to the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The Super Eagles drew 1-1 with weak teams Lesotho and Zimbabwe in their first two games.

There were demands for Peseiro to be fired by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

Enoh, however, said he would talk to the Portuguese to fix things.

“Next week, at some point, there will be a conversation with the coach,” Enoh told reporters in Abuja.

“All of that is trying to react to the outcome of these matches, especially the World Cup qualifying matches.”

Enoh also cautioned against firing the 63-year-old with the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations a few months away.

“As a minister, I am worried that the national team is not meeting expectations,” he said.

“AFCON is so near that we need to be careful in what decisions we make.
