The presidency has confirmed that security operatives killed some of the abductors who took pupils and teachers hostage in Orire, Oyo State, while eight others were captured. The victims regained their freedom on Friday after spending 56 days in the hands of their captors.
President Tinubu's spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed the details on X. He said eight of the kidnappers are now held by the Department of State Services.
"In the course of the rescue operation, eight of the kidnappers were arrested and are now in DSS custody, while some of them were neutralised," Onanuga wrote.
The presidency stressed that no deal was struck to secure the release of the abducted persons. According to the spokesman, one of the terrorists — a ringleader whose freedom the kidnappers demanded — remains in custody facing prosecution for his crimes.
"There was no quid pro quo in the rescue, as one of the terrorists, a kingpin whose release the kidnappers demanded, is being prosecuted for his atrocities," he noted.
Onanuga promised that security agencies would provide more details about the operation soon. "The security agencies will give a full account soon," he said.
