A truck carrying table water lost control and overturned at the Toll Gate section of Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway on Tuesday afternoon. Multiple commuters escaped death in the 4:45 p.m. incident.
Mr Salau Hammed, Commander of TRACE's Ota Unit, confirmed the accident details to reporters. According to him, the driver was travelling from Ilo-Awela toward Toll Gate when excessive speed caused him to lose control.
No one died or sustained injuries in the crash. The truck's cargo scattered across the busy highway during the overturn.
Hammed expressed gratitude that lives were spared. He told reporters: "We thank God that no life was lost and nobody sustained injuries in the accident."
Safety concerns prompted the TRACE commander to issue warnings to motorists. He urged drivers to avoid reckless behaviour and maintain their vehicles properly before travelling.
Commercial motorcyclists and roadside traders came under scrutiny from the official. They must stop engaging in unsafe practices along highways, Hammed cautioned.
Bus operators also received a stern message from TRACE leadership. Indiscriminate parking and stopping to pick passengers on the expressway could trigger collisions with articulated vehicles, he noted.
TRACE remains committed to strict enforcement along the Toll Gate corridor. Hammed said this approach would help reduce preventable accidents on the Lagos–Abeokuta route.
Emergency and traffic agencies worked together to clear the scene. Officials evacuated the vehicle and restored traffic flow on the expressway.
