A mob in Maraban Jos, Kaduna State set a woman on fire over an unproven accusation. The victim, Malama Ummulkhairi, was an Islamic teacher and mother of five.
Ummulkhairi had traveled to the area to attend a lecture at a local school. She became separated from her group and asked children for directions.
Residents then accused her of trying to steal children in the neighbourhood. Those close to her dismissed the claim as completely false.
Police officers responded quickly and took her into custody for her safety. Authorities wanted to investigate the allegations properly at the station.
A large crowd gathered outside the police facility on Sunday. The mob overwhelmed the officers and forced their way inside.
They removed Ummulkhairi from police protection by force. The attackers then killed her and burned her body.
Kaduna State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement. Officials described it as one of the most brutal acts of mob justice in recent memory.
The killing has sparked anger across Kaduna State. Rights groups worry about the rising trend of vigilante violence fueled by rumors.
Communities are calling for urgent action against jungle justice. Many fear such incidents will continue if authorities don't act decisively.
