Six Internet Fraudsters Jailed in Ilorin by Federal High Court

In a continued effort to combat cybercrime and related offenses in Kwara and its environs, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has secured the conviction of six internet fraudsters.

The convicts were charged by the EFCC’s Ilorin Zonal Command and sentenced by Justice Evelyn Anyadike of the Federal High Court sitting in Ilorin, Kwara State.

The convicts, Ismail Abdulbasit from Adavi Local Government Area of Kogi State, Oladipo Victor from Omu-Aran in Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, Ibrahim Oluwatosin from Ipetumodu in Osun State, Ayantola Segun Samuel from Omu-Aran in Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, Musbau Waris Atomo from Orolu Local Government Area of Osun State, and Babalola Rasaq Oluwadamilare from Ogun State, were found guilty of separate charges brought against them by the EFCC.

The charges against the convicts included fraudulent impersonation and obtaining money through false pretenses using various online platforms.

The court found them guilty of the offenses, which are contrary to the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention Etc.) Act 2015 and punishable under the same Act.

In her judgment, Justice Anyadike ordered the trio of Ibrahim, Babalola, and Oluwatosin to pay a fine of N200,000 each, while Oladipo, Ismail, and Ayantola were ordered to pay a fine of N100,000 each.

The judge also ordered that all phones used as instruments of the crime and the money obtained from the unlawful activities be forfeited to the Federal Government.

The conviction of these six internet fraudsters is part of a larger effort by the EFCC to combat cybercrime in the region.

In February 2024, the agency arrested 48 students and two residents of Malete who were suspected of engaging in internet fraud-related activities. With this latest conviction, a total of 30 individuals have been convicted from that group.

The ongoing efforts of the EFCC and the Federal High Court in Ilorin demonstrate a strong commitment to reducing cybercrime and related offenses in Kwara and its surrounding areas.

By holding these individuals accountable for their actions, the court hopes to deter others from engaging in similar activities and create a safer online environment for all.
