Nigeria’s national women’s basketball champions, D’Tigress, paid a courtesy visit to Senator Ned Munir Nwoko, Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports Development and Chancellor of the Sports University of Nigeria, in Abuja on Tuesday.

The atmosphere was one of mutual admiration and celebration as Senator Nwoko lauded the team’s recent historic feat — clinching their fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket title following a thrilling victory over Mali on Sunday night in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. The players, in turn, expressed appreciation for the Senator’s consistent support for sports advancement in the country.

Describing the D’Tigress victory as a monumental moment for Nigeria, Senator Nwoko highlighted the significance of their achievement for the growth of sports, particularly women’s participation in athletics. He noted that the team’s dominance is a clear reflection of resilience, discipline, and national pride.

Reaffirming his commitment to sports development, Senator Nwoko pledged to use his platform in the Senate to drive legislation and policy reforms that will enhance funding, infrastructure, and welfare for athletes nationwide. The visit follows the team’s return to Abuja on Monday, August 4, 2025, where they continue to receive accolades for rewriting the history of African women’s basketball.
