Nigeria's Senate will reconvene on June 23 for an emergency sitting to tackle security challenges. The lawmakers had broken for recess on June 11, with July 7 as the scheduled return date.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio requested the early recall. Emmanuel Odo, the Senate Clerk, issued the notice on June 15.
All senators must report to the chamber by 11 a.m. that morning. Security matters top the agenda for discussion.
"The purpose of this emergency sitting is to enable the Senate to consider matters of urgent national importance, particularly issues relating to national security and other critical concerns that require immediate legislative attention," according to the official notice.
The Senate acknowledged that calling lawmakers back early might inconvenience them. It urged all members to make necessary travel arrangements and attend.
Insecurity has remained a major challenge across Nigeria in recent months. The emergency session signals growing concern among lawmakers about the deteriorating situation.
