Dear Hon. Mrakpor, may I draw your attention to your position as elicited at the Channels Tv program of yesterday on the suspension of Sen. Ovie Omo-Agege. In that program, you freely expressed your views on the suspension saga wherein your major justification was that all organizations have their rules, and that that members are expected to abide by such rules.
My dear Honourable Mrakpor, I find it difficult to accept your logic, in lieu of which I want to posit that in a constitutional democracy as we pretend to practice, there can be no rules, except they conform with the provisions of the grand rule, the grand norm of our land. That grand norm is the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. I need not remind you that the Constitution guarantees the Freedom of Expression, which when exercised cannot be a basis for undue and vindictive punishment. Let me draw your attention to the fact that the statement by Sen. Omo-Agege was brought to the attention of the senate by Senator Dino Melaye (Kogi West). May I now ask if statements of greater proportion has not been made against the National Assembly by members from other regions before, and how many have Representatives from Minority regions like you have been able to bring to the notice of the Assembly for punishment?
My dear Honourable Mrakpor, I may not be a direct constituent of the embattled Senator, neither am I a direct Constituent of yours, but I am a Deltan, and all Representatives of every part of Delta State wholly or partially responsible to me, your very self, and Sen. Omo-Agege inclusive.
It is rather disturbing that some of you at the National Assembly, particularly those of you from the minority peoples have not grasp the undercurrent and dynamics that is at work at the Assembly, such that it is so easy to use you against yourselves, especially as was displayed by your very respected self at National TV yesterday. It is so easy for Delta politicians to remember their Party colours but forget their roots. Today, Delta is shortchanged for 90 legislative days, and irritatingly, some of you guys are happy about that. When you are suppose to rally around not just Senator Omo-Agege, but the good people of Delta Central in particular, and Delta State in general, you people are busy justifying the undue and disproportionate victimization of a Delta Senator by the new Caesar of the National Assembly.
Today it is Sen. Ovie Omo-Agege. Tomorrow it may be Joan Onyemaechi Mrakpor.
