The Chairman of Isoko North Local Government Area, Godwin Ogorugba, has called on the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) executives in the area to prioritize peace as they prepare for their upcoming election.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by the NULGE electoral committee and aspirants at his office in Ozoro on Thursday, Ogorugba emphasized the need for a free, fair, and credible electoral process. He urged candidates to view the election as a "family affair" rather than a do-or-die contest.
“Do not see the election as a do-or-die matter, but rather as a family affair. After the election, you will all continue as staff of the council. The welfare of staff should be paramount and should not be overshadowed by attempts at blackmail by those seeking to lead. I want to make it clear that I have no personal interest in this election. I will work with whoever emerges as the winners,” Ogorugba said.
The chairman further stressed that his intervention was solely for security reasons, reiterating his opposition to the imposition of candidates. “I do not support the imposition of any candidate, which is why I advocate for allowing everyone to run. Let’s focus on unity and peaceful coexistence,” he added.
In her remarks, the council’s Head of Personnel Management, Mrs. Irene Onwodi, appreciated the chairman for convening the meeting. She announced plans to hold a similar session with the candidates, emphasizing the importance of sportsmanship and cautioning against forming cabals within the union.
In another development, Chairman Ogorugba successfully mediated a leadership crisis within the Owhelogbo unit of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).
During a meeting at the council’s executive chamber, called to address petitions concerning the union’s leadership, Ogorugba underscored the importance of unity and respect for leadership hierarchy.
“I firmly believe in maintaining a proper leadership structure, and it is important for subordinates to respect and collaborate with their superiors. Long-term relationships should take precedence over temporary disagreements or positions,” Ogorugba said.
Drawing inspiration from the biblical story of Elisha’s loyalty to Elijah, Ogorugba highlighted the value of dedication and teamwork. He also pledged to support the union in fostering growth in the transport sector within Owhelogbo and the entire Isoko North region.
At the end of the meeting, union members agreed to promote cooperation and reaffirmed Comrade C. Anthony’s leadership. It was also resolved that no factional leadership would be recognized going forward.
With these interventions, Ogorugba continues to demonstrate his commitment to fostering unity and ensuring peaceful coexistence within the local government area.
