Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has issued a stern warning to contractors handling government projects, vowing to sanction those who execute substandard work. He also extended the warning to site engineers who approve poorly executed projects for payment.
The governor delivered the warning on Tuesday during an inspection of the 6.5-kilometer Achalla-Ibusa Road project, which is being executed by the state government.
Expressing dissatisfaction with the quality of drainage work on the project, Governor Oborevwori reaffirmed his administration's zero tolerance for shoddy jobs. He disclosed that his decision to personally inspect the road was prompted by unsatisfactory feedback from individuals he had earlier sent to assess the site.
"The work on Achalla-Ibusa Road is bad, very bad," Oborevwori said. "The poor drainage will not affect the stone basing and asphalting of the road, but the drainage must be redone. Contractors must understand that this administration will not tolerate substandard work.
"This is a warning to all contractors. If you do a bad job, we will not pay you. Even if payment has been made, the site engineer will face serious consequences. Contractors who fail to deliver quality projects will be blacklisted, and their contracts revoked," he declared.
The governor emphasized his commitment to personally inspecting projects across Delta State, noting that 2023 would be marked by a focus on ensuring value for money in government-funded initiatives. "From January, I will intensify project inspections across all 25 local government areas. Contractors must maximize the dry season to speed up their work, or they will lose their contracts," he said.
Highlighting the administration's broader development goals, Oborevwori assured Deltans of a surge in new projects across multiple sectors, including roads, health, and education. "We aim to complete and commission significant projects in the next four months, ensuring substantial progress by the time we reach two years in office," he added.
Governor Oborevwori also praised the recently completed 2-kilometer road leading to the 63 Brigade Barracks of the Nigerian Army in Aboh-Ogwashi. "The contractor executed this project excellently within three months. This road will foster further development and support the Army in building additional structures," he noted.
Other projects inspected by the governor included the Okpanam-Ibusa bypass gully erosion site, the perimeter fence and access road at Asaba International Airport, and the Kwekagbor Layout near Summit Junction, Asaba.
Governor Oborevwori reiterated that his administration remains committed to delivering high-quality infrastructure projects, adding that Deltans will soon witness more transformative developments across the state.
