A 23-year-old Nigerian medical student, Nnani Adaobi Marian, died from injuries sustained in a Russian airstrike in Kharkiv, Ukraine, just days before she was set to graduate. The strike hit the Kholodnohirskyi district on June 29, 2026, leaving her critically wounded.

Adaobi received initial treatment in Kharkiv before being transferred to Germany, where she passed away on Sunday, July 5. Doctors in both countries worked to save her, but her injuries proved too severe.

Kharkiv National Medical University released a statement honouring the young graduate. "Nnani Adaobi Marian was a bright, sincere and kind-hearted person who easily connected with others and showed exceptional dedication to her studies and desire to help people," the institution said.

The university noted that medical teams "fought for her life until the very end" despite their efforts. The Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor's Office also extended condolences to her family, acknowledging the dedication of healthcare workers who treated her.

Adaobi had studied at Kharkiv National Medical University since 2020 and completed internships at the University of Cambridge and Biruni University in Türkiye. She and her friend, Fatima Huseynova, were heading to a graduation photoshoot when the airstrike occurred.

Fatima was killed instantly at the scene, while Adaobi was rushed to hospital with life-threatening wounds. The attack also injured 12 other civilians, adding to the mounting toll of the ongoing conflict.
