Obi Expresses Sadness Over Onitsha Building Collapse, Urges Compliance to Standards

The Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the last general elections, Peter Obi, has expressed sadness over the lives lost in a building collapse at Ochanja Market in Onitsha, while urging the general public to adhere strictly to engineering and building standards for people’s safety.

A block of shops still under construction collapsed on Monday night, killing about six individuals and leaving over 20 others in need of rescue.

Obi, in a press statement by his media adviser, Mr Valentine Obineme, emphasized that building collapses would become a thing of the past if we follow proper standards and procedures.

“Only trained, licensed, and professional personnel should handle building projects, and materials must meet project specifications,” said Obi, lamenting the tragic loss of lives and injuries sustained in the incident.

He also expressed gratitude to those involved in rescuing the trapped victims and called on the state government to investigate the root cause of the collapse.

Obi has reached out to the families of the victims, offering his condolences and support during this difficult time.

He stressed that the victims were individuals striving to make ends meet and that their loss is a tragedy for the community.

The incident highlights the importance of adhering to building standards and regulations to prevent such accidents in the future.

It is crucial for authorities to take necessary measures to ensure the safety of the public and prevent further loss of life.
