The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has recently voiced its concerns regarding the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) plans to relocate key departments and staff from its headquarters in Abuja to Lagos.
The NEF argues that this move could disrupt operations and negatively impact the economy.
According to NEF, the relocation of these departments would lead to a significant change in the operations of the CBN.
The Northern Elders argue that this decision could have a detrimental effect on the Nigerian economy, as it may lead to a decrease in foreign direct investment, capital inflows, and overall economic growth.
In a statement by NEF Director of Publicity and Advocacy, Dr. Hakeem Baba- Ahmed, the forum highlighted the potential consequences of this decision. “The relocation of key departments to Lagos will disrupt operations and may lead to a decline in the efficiency of the CBN. The Northern Elders urge the government to reconsider this decision and prioritize the nation’s overall progress and the well-being of its citizens,” said Baba- Ahmed.
The NEF also emphasized the importance of maintaining regional balance and inclusiveness in Nigeria’s economic policies.
The Northern Elders believe that the relocation of these departments to Lagos may disproportionately affect the Northern region, further widening the economic gap between Northern Nigeria and other regions, potentially exacerbating social and political tensions.
