NCC Grants 21-Day Extension for Glo and MTN Interconnect Debt Resolution

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has granted a 21-day extension to Globacom (Glo) and MTN Nigeria for resolving their interconnect debt dispute.

The decision comes after the NCC had approved a phased disconnection of Glo from MTN’s network due to long-standing interconnect debt issues between the two telecommunications companies.

The NCC’s approval of the disconnection was met with concern over the potential impact on consumers and the seamless operation of the national telecoms network.

However, the commission continued to engage both parties to facilitate a resolution that would prioritize consumer interests.

According to a statement released by the NCC, both parties have now reached an agreement to resolve all outstanding issues between them.

The commission has put the phased disconnection on hold for 21 days from January 17, 2024, to allow Glo and MTN to settle their interconnect debt.

While the NCC expects the two companies to resolve all outstanding issues within the 21-day period, it also insists that interconnect debts must be settled by all operating companies as a necessary component of their regulatory obligations.

The NCC’s decision to grant a 21-day extension for Glo and MTN to resolve their interconnect debt dispute demonstrates the commission’s commitment to ensuring a stable and consumer-focused telecommunications environment in Nigeria.

The outcome of the negotiations between Glo and MTN will have significant implications for the future of interconnectivity and the overall health of the Nigerian telecommunications industry.
