NMU staff defend council appointments, slam "faceless propaganda"

Staff of the Nigeria Maritime University (NMU), Okerenkoko, in Warri South-West LGA, Delta State, have dismissed what they describe as "faceless propaganda" aimed at discrediting the recent appointments of principal officers by the university’s Governing Council.

In a statement released yesterday and signed by Comrade Moses Oghenekome Ogege, Mr. Fine-Boy Doubra, Mrs. Sarah Kattey, Mr. Ossa, and Mr. Alen Igwe, the staff reaffirmed their confidence in the Council’s transparent and merit-based selection process.

“The allegations circulating are not only baseless but also undermine the progress NMU has achieved under its current leadership,” the statement said.

The staff detailed the appointment procedure: advertisements were placed in two national newspapers inviting applications for the roles of Registrar, Bursar, and University Librarian. The process, they stressed, was open and visible, including on the university’s internal platforms.

A Selection Committee was later formed by the Council, which also approved the hiring of three independent consultants—one per position. After a rigorous interview process, top candidates were recommended and appointed based on performance.

“This process was exemplary in fairness and integrity. It is baffling what the anonymous critics see as lacking in transparency,” the staff said.

They added that the university community has embraced the appointments and noted that visible improvements on campus reflect the competence of the new leadership.

The statement also included a vote of confidence in the entire Council, with special commendation to the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Alhaji Abdulahi Bardi, for his visionary leadership.

Rejecting attempts to sow discord, the staff warned against attempts to mislead the public. “NMU is a hub of excellence, not a ground for baseless accusations or anonymous blackmail,” they stated.

They urged stakeholders and the public to disregard the falsehoods and support the university's ongoing reforms and achievements.
