Nigeria’s Wildlife Protection Bill Passes First Reading in House of Representatives

Nigeria’s Wildlife Protection Bill recently passed its first reading in the House of Representatives, marking a significant step forward in the fight against wildlife poaching and trafficking.

The bill, sponsored by the Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Environment, Hon. Terseer Ugbor, aims to update and improve current Nigerian laws against trafficking wildlife and endangered species.

During the first reading, Ugbor highlighted the importance of the bill, stating that wildlife poaching is not just a crime against nature but a threat to the planet.

The proposed legislation would enhance law enforcement capabilities, increase investigative powers, and expand courts’ ability to expedite wildlife cases and recover assets.

It would also create corporate liability, support international cooperation, and impose stringent penalties on traffickers and poachers.

The bill’s passage would bring Nigeria in line with international standards and agreements, demonstrating the country’s commitment to being a responsible and active participant in the global effort to tackle wildlife trafficking and protect endangered species.

Several organizations, including the Africa Nature Investors Foundation (ANI), the London-based Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA), and Wild Africa Fund (WAF), have been actively supporting the Nigerian Government’s efforts to fight illegal wildlife trafficking.

With the backing of the UK Illegal Wildlife Trade Challenge Fund and the US Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, these organizations are working together to ensure the swift enactment of the bill into law.

The Wildlife Protection Bill’s first reading in the House of Representatives is a positive step towards protecting Nigeria’s natural heritage and preserving its wildlife.

If passed, the legislation would not only benefit the country but also contribute to global conservation efforts.
