Nigerian Government to Build Student Hostels in 36 Tertiary Institutions

The Nigerian Government has announced plans to construct student hostels in 36 tertiary institutions across the country.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), aims to provide solid buildings that can compare with international standards and accommodate 50 to 60 percent of students on campus.

During a meeting with the new leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Sonny Echono, emphasized the government’s commitment to improving the living conditions of students in higher institutions.

He highlighted the increased allocation for the maintenance of TETFund infrastructures above five years in the 2024 intervention cycle and promised to address the state of the NANS secretariat.

In addition to the construction of student hostels, the government has also initiated a policy to ensure that students have access to modern educational resources and research materials.

Through the Tertiary Education Research, Applications, and Services (TERAS) platform, students can access digital services such as sponsored mobile internet access, plagiarism checking, journal and research subscriptions, and intervention funding.

Senator Ned Nwoko, a member of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund, pledged the committee’s support for Nigerian students and commended the efforts of President Bola Tinubu and TETFund in prioritizing education.

The NANS President, Lucky Emonefe, praised the government’s initiatives and promised to work with the government and monitor the progress of the projects.

He expressed gratitude to President Tinubu and the support of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund.

As the Nigerian Government embarks on this ambitious project to improve the living conditions of students in higher institutions, it is hoped that the initiative will lead to a more conducive learning environment and enhance the overall educational experience for students.
