Nasarawa Governor Urges Citizens to Accept Supreme Court Ruling Amid Protests

Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State addressed the public on Friday, January 19, 2024, following the Supreme Court’s affirmation of his election victory.

The governor’s statement comes in the wake of protests that erupted in the state capital, Lafia, after the apex court’s verdict.

The Supreme Court upheld the decision of the Court of Appeal, which had earlier nullified the election of Governor Sule.

The governor, in his address, emphasized that protests would not change the judgment of the Supreme Court and urged residents to accept the ruling and maintain peace in the state.

In a show of support, former governors of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Adamu and Tanko Al-Makura, were present with Governor Sule during his visit to the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The governor’s visit to the Villa was to meet with President Bola Tinubu, presumably to discuss the situation in Nasarawa State and other matters of governance.

Despite Governor Sule’s appeal for calm, protests continued in the state capital, with some residents barricading major roads and burning tires. The protests have caused disruptions to traffic, with motorists having to find alternative routes.

The governor’s supporters, on the other hand, have taken to the streets to celebrate the Supreme Court’s decision. They have been seen waving party flags and expressing their satisfaction with the court’s ruling.

As the situation in Nasarawa State remains tense, it is essential for all parties to exercise restraint and respect the rule of law.

While the right to peaceful protest is a fundamental aspect of democracy, it should not be exercised in a manner that causes harm to others or disrupts the daily lives of the citizens.

In conclusion, Governor Abdullahi Sule’s call for acceptance of the Supreme Court’s judgment is a step towards maintaining peace and stability in Nasarawa State.

It is now up to the residents to heed his call and work towards a more united and prosperous future for their state.
