Minister Urges National Assembly to Address 2% Tax for National Senior Secondary Education Commission

The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, has called on the National Assembly to address the issue of a two percent tax that should be allocated to the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC) to support infrastructure development in senior secondary schools.

Mamman made this appeal during a recent Stakeholders’ Validation Meeting of the Draft National Minimum Standards and Draft Strategic Plans for senior secondary education in Abuja.

Mamman emphasized the primary role of NSSEC in providing and enforcing minimum standards for secondary schools in Nigeria in areas such as teaching, quality assurance, planning, research, and statistics.

He also acknowledged the efforts of the National Assembly in establishing the NSSEC, which had previously been absent in the coordination of senior secondary education.

The minister urged state commissioners of education to implement the national standards and strategic plans to improve the secondary educational landscape.

He emphasized that adopting the roadmap of the validation would lead to effective policies that would enhance the quality of education.

Dr. Iyela Ajayi, the Executive Secretary of NSSEC, announced that the commission had successfully developed a National Policy on Senior Secondary Education and its implementation guidelines.

The implementation of these two documents is expected to address the learning crisis at the pre-tertiary education level and provide relevant education that will help young people acquire the necessary skills for a successful livelihood and active participation in society.

The minister’s call for the National Assembly to address the issue of the 2% tax for NSSEC is an important step towards ensuring that senior secondary schools have the necessary infrastructure to provide quality education to their students.
