Honda Automobile has joined Air Peace, Union Bank, and teacher associations as a major sponsor of the Maltina Teacher of the Year Award. Nigerian Breweries organises the annual programme under the Felix Oheiwerei Foundation.

The automotive firm is donating an HR-V vehicle worth N41.5 million to the grand prize winner. Other corporate partners continue to play crucial roles in supporting the 11-year initiative.

Daisuke Mita, Managing Director of Honda Automobile Western Africa Limited, explained Honda's decision at the flag-off in Lagos. He noted that education forms the bedrock of economic development and teachers drive that value chain.

According to him, Honda's involvement reflects its commitment to corporate social responsibility in the education sector. The company believes in supporting programmes that recognise teacher excellence.

Nigeria's secondary school educators can now enter the 12th edition of the competition. Applications opened on June 3 and close on August 7, 2026.

Uzodinma Odenigbo, Public Relations Officer of NB-Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund, outlined the prize structure for winners. He disclosed that the overall victor gets N10 million cash, the Honda vehicle, a year's Maltina supply, and overseas training.

Odenigbo added that the winner's school will receive a N30 million infrastructure project. First runner-up takes home N5 million and a trophy, while second runner-up receives N3 million and a trophy.

All state champions will get recognition plaques and N1 million each in cash rewards. The competition aims to identify and celebrate outstanding teachers nationwide.
