Prominent humanitarian leader and Diaspora Ambassador, Chief Dr. Mrs. Mercy Eguriase Sule JP, has officially resigned from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), defecting to the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking to journalists at the NNPP Secretariat in Asaba, Chief Sule launched a scathing attack on the NDC leadership, labelling the party a "joke" and accusing it of nepotism, corruption, and ticket racketeering. She claimed she could no longer align with a platform that contradicts true democratic values.
Chief Sule alleged that no legitimate primary election took place for the Ethiope East House of Assembly ticket. Instead, she accused her rival of allegedly hiring thugs to disrupt the process to avoid a looming defeat.
According to Sule, the party's democratic processes were completely bypassed due to familial favouritism.
"Mr. Ikie is an in-law of the NDC Governorship Candidate. That is the sole reason he was handed the party’s ticket," Sule stated. "He knew he was not going to win a fair primary election, so he sponsored thugs to disrupt it, knowing he could simply lobby the highest bidder to get his way."
While she praised the NDC’s national leadership and its presidential ticket as "people of notable character," she emphasised that the actions of the state governorship candidate made it impossible for her to remain. She characterised the local leadership's political motives as a desperate bid to simply "grab, grab, and grab."
Now a member of the NNPP, Chief Sule expressed gratitude to the party's leadership for their warm reception and pledged to strengthen its footprint across Delta State. She confidently promised to deliver robust, people-focused representation for the Ethiope East Constituency when elected to the House of Assembly in 2027.
Turning her attention to the broader issues plaguing her constituency, the humanitarian leader fiercely criticised the Delta State government for a lack of vision and economic planning.
She highlighted the severe hardships faced by local families, noting that parents are forced to liquidate life savings and sell properties to educate children who ultimately graduate into joblessness. Chief Sule lamented that this economic desperation has forced some local youths into cybercrime ("yahoo yahoo") and pushed women into prostitution just to survive.
Reiterating her commitment to bringing tangible empowerment to the region, Chief Sule urged her supporters to stay focused. "I am the answer to the needs of the people of Ethiope East," she assured. "Change is coming, and all will be well."
