Public commentator Mahdi Shehu has slammed efforts to reintegrate former Boko Haram fighters in Borno State. He called the move dangerous and a sign of failed governance.
Shehu made his position clear on X on Tuesday. He was responding to an NTA report that over 3,000 ex-insurgents and their families had been welcomed back into communities.
The policy won't deliver lasting peace, he argued. Instead, it risks making the region's security crisis even worse.
"The reintegration of murderers, arsonists, vandals and willful criminals is counterproductive," Shehu wrote. "It's an admission of governance failure."
Long-term consequences could prove catastrophic for the state. According to him, the decision may spark fresh security threats rather than end them.
Communities ravaged by insurgency would suffer most, Shehu warned. Such an approach only guarantees greater tragedy ahead.
