Nigeria's lawmakers have started reviewing a batch of defence bills meant to reshape the military and boost soldier welfare. Speaker Abbas Tajudeen made this known at a public hearing in Abuja on Monday.

The proposed laws aim to tackle fresh security challenges facing the nation. They also seek to build a stronger, more effective armed forces institution.

Tajudeen noted that the bills fit squarely within the 10th House's legislative priorities. He stressed lawmakers' commitment to overhauling the defence sector.

Maritime piracy in the Gulf of Guinea poses a serious threat. Cyber warfare and links between organised crime and terrorism have worsened the security landscape.

One key proposal is the Armed Forces Farms and Ranches Scheme Bill. It would tie food security to military operations in farming communities hit by conflict.

Another bill focuses on gender representation in the armed forces. Its aim is boosting inclusivity when recruiting and training military personnel.

A third seeks to overhaul military administration through the Nigerian Military Force Bill. It would replace the existing Armed Forces Act with updated rules.

The Veterans' Federation of Nigeria Bill targets retired soldiers. It's designed to improve their living standards and support systems.

Tajudeen called on various groups to join the process. Military officers, retired servicemen, civil society bodies, gender activists, lawyers and ordinary Nigerians should contribute, he said.

House Committee on Defence Chairman Babajimi Benson called the hearing crucial. Citizens and stakeholders need a platform to shape stronger defence laws, according to him.

Benson listed the bills' focus areas during the session. Military education, joint operations, healthcare, strategic research and military doctrine are on the agenda.

Veterans' support and governance reforms also feature prominently. Food security and gender inclusion remain central to the legislative push.

The two-day hearing brought together key stakeholders for robust debate. Officials expect the process to yield laws fit for modern realities.
