Yusuf Usman, 45, is dead after getting trapped in a well while trying to retrieve his phone. He was attempting to recover the device from inside a pit in Kwa Town, Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area of Kano State.
Fire officials received an emergency call on Wednesday morning around 11:13 am. Kabiru Tata, a staff member, alerted rescue teams to the incident.
Rescue officers rushed to the scene and discovered Usman trapped deep inside. The well had been converted into a waste disposal pit.
According to Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, the Fire Service's spokesman, Usman had gone down to find his phone after it fell in. He couldn't find his way back up.
The rescue team pulled him out unconscious from the well. Medical examination showed he'd died from oxygen deprivation and extreme heat exposure.
His body was given to the Kwa Town Ward Head, Alhaji Mukhtar. The incident has sparked fresh concerns about well safety in the area.
