The Chairman of Isoko North Council in Delta State, Godwin Ogorugba, has announced the commencement of the new minimum wage for council workers, effective from November.
Ogorugba made the announcement during an ongoing screening of Isoko North teachers at the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) hall in Ozoro, the council’s headquarters.
He noted that the screening process is not punitive but aims to create an effective template for implementing the new wage as directed by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
Ogorugba expressed his gratitude to Delta State Local Government Commission Chairman, Joseph Otiwe, and his team for initiating the screening exercise. He also thanked the council’s workforce for their support during his election, urging continued unity and cooperation to meet the administration's goals.
During the event, Joseph Otiwe commended the commitment to improving primary education and emphasized the importance of patience among those awaiting screening. He extended his appreciation to Ogorugba for backing the initiative and supporting the welfare of council employees.
In a related development, the Isoko North Local Government has issued a 90-day ultimatum for the removal of illegal structures and unauthorized trading activities along major roads, including the Ozoro-Kwale Road, NDC, Ala Square, Hospital Road, and Ozoro-Owhelogbo Road. The council has directed that any structures still in place by January 2025 will face demolition, and non-compliance will lead to the seizure of goods.
“This measure is essential to maintain public safety, order, and smooth traffic flow,” Ogorugba emphasized, urging traders to move to designated areas. “This directive is final and non-negotiable,” he added.
The newly inaugurated Environmental Task Force, chaired by Emmanuel Evuera and comprising seven members, will oversee the enforcement of these directives. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Vote Umukoro, Secretary to the Local Government, and other supervisory councillors, all of whom support the initiative to improve the region’s safety and order.
