Isoko Communities Unite Against Governor Oborevwori’s Plan to Relocate Delta Varsity Faculties

The people of Isoko North and Isoko South local government areas in Delta State have come together to challenge Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s plan to relocate faculties of the Delta State University of Science and Technology from Ozoro to Orerokpe in Okpe Local Government Area.

The move has sparked controversy and tension among the communities, with many calling for the governor to reconsider his decision.

The governing council of the newly established university has already decided to move the faculties of Social Sciences and Management to the governor’s community in Orerokpe.

This has been met with strong resistance from the Isoko communities, who argue that the move is not only unnecessary but also potentially harmful to the development of the region.

A pressure group, Ozoro Positive Voice, has condemned the decision and called on the governor to drop the relocation plan to save people’s investments in the town and avoid the total collapse of the newly established institution.

The group’s leader, Dr Enahoro Michael, said, “Historically, Ozoro and Orerokpe are brothers, as they are children of the same parents, and as such, an Ika man cannot come to divide us.”

In a separate press statement, the former chairman of the Isoko South and Isoko North Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Elders Council, P. O. Oju, urged Gov Oborevwori to re-think his plan of relocating the university’s faculties.

He cited the example of former Governor James Ibori, who revived the dying Ogwashi and Ozoro polytechnics and established the Oghara Polytechnic without causing unnecessary tension in the state.

The situation has led to calls for the governor to listen to the concerns of the people and not create further political tension in Delta State.

Failure to do so could result in a vote of no confidence in the ruling party, the PDP, which would be a significant blow to the governor’s administration.

The controversy surrounding the relocation of the faculties of the Delta State University of Science and Technology highlights the importance of considering the needs and concerns of local communities in decision-making processes.

It remains to be seen whether Governor Oborevwori will heed the advice of the Isoko communities and reconsider his plan.
