INEC Announces Surulere Bye-Election in Lagos Following Gbajabiamila’s Resignation

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a bye-election in the Surulere Federal Constituency of Lagos State.

The announcement comes after the resignation of the former occupant, Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila, who was appointed as the Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu.

The notice of the bye-election was published in accordance with the Electoral Act 2022, which requires that such notice be made public at least 14 days before the election.

The election is scheduled to take place on February 3, 2024, and will be part of a series of re-run and by-elections in nine states across the country.

Political parties are now gearing up for the event, with the conduct of party primary elections and the resolution of disputes scheduled to take place between January 5 and January 9. Public campaigns will begin on January 18 and run until February 1, giving candidates just over two weeks to make their case to the voters of Surulere.

The Surulere seat has been a key battleground in recent elections, and the upcoming bye-election is expected to be no different. With the resignation of Gbajabiamila, the race is wide open, and several candidates have already thrown their hats into the ring.

As the date of the election draws near, the people of Surulere are eagerly awaiting the chance to choose their next representative in the National Assembly.

The outcome of the election will have significant implications for the future of the constituency, and the candidates are sure to engage in a spirited contest to win the hearts and minds of the voters.
