House of Reps Urges JAMB to Extend UTME Registration by Two Weeks

The House of Representatives has called on the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) to extend the registration period for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) by two weeks.

The decision was made after the adoption of a motion moved by Representative Bello Shinkafi during a plenary session on Thursday.

According to Shinkafi, the extension is necessary due to the current economic climate in Nigeria, which has made it difficult for many families to register their children within the initial deadline.

The 2024 UTME registration began on January 15 and was initially set to end on February 26.

The House of Representatives is concerned that the limited registration period will not allow for adequate coverage and participation in this year’s UTME.

They believe that extending the registration by two weeks will encourage more parents to register their children and demonstrate confidence in the current administration’s commitment to education.

In addition to urging JAMB to extend the registration period, the House mandated the relevant Committee on Education and Legislative Compliance to ensure strict compliance with the extension.

The Joint Admission Matriculation Board was established by law to register and conduct the UTME for the purpose of admitting candidates into tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

The House of Representatives is determined to ensure that all potential candidates have the opportunity to participate in the examination and pursue their educational goals.

The extension of the UTME registration period by two weeks is a welcome development for many families in Nigeria, as it offers them a chance to overcome the financial challenges they may be facing and still register their children for the examination.
