House of Representatives Urges Mandatory Drug Testing for Secondary School Students

The House of Representatives has called for the introduction of mandatory drug testing for secondary school students in Nigeria.

The motion was presented by Rep. Moshood Oshun (APC-Lagos) and was adopted during a plenary session in Abuja on Thursday.

The move comes as a response to the growing concern over substance abuse among young people in the country.

Studies have shown that one in every four students aged between 15-19 years abuses substances, with codeine-containing syrup and tramadol being the most commonly abused drugs.

The House of Representatives believes that implementing a Random Student Drug Testing (RSDT) program can serve as a deterrent and help identify students who need assistance in staying drug-free.

The primary aim of this program is to prevent substance abuse, not to punish students. Early intervention is crucial in tackling the issue of substance abuse in Nigeria.

In addition to the call for mandatory drug testing, the House of Representatives also urged the National Orientation Agency and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to increase awareness campaigns on substance abuse for secondary school students nationwide.

The House has mandated its Committees on Basic Education and Services and Healthcare Services to ensure compliance with the proposed measures and report back within four weeks for further legislative action.

The House of Representatives believes that the wellbeing of the students and their contributions to national development are of utmost importance.

By introducing mandatory drug testing and raising awareness about substance abuse, they hope to secure the future of Nigerian youth and foster socio-economic development in the country.
