Health workers' nonchalance threatens improved healthcare delivery in Delta – NUJ Chairman

By Advocate | September 9, 2024 | 2 min read |

The Delta State Government’s efforts to enhance healthcare delivery are at risk due to the indifferent attitude of some health workers, according to Comrade Churchill Oyowe, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council.

Speaking on a recent radio program in Asaba, Comrade Oyowe expressed concerns that despite the progress made through the Contributory Health Insurance Scheme, persistent complaints about the conduct of some staff members pose a serious threat to the program’s success.

He highlighted that the nonchalant attitude of some health workers towards patients, in both public and private healthcare facilities, could tarnish the Delta State Government’s reputation, despite the well-intentioned scheme.

"The state government’s efforts could be compromised if the behavior of some health workers and facilities under the scheme is not addressed," Comrade Oyowe remarked, urging authorities to take immediate action to curb workers’ nonchalance and the recurring “no drug” issue.

Comrade Oyowe also alleged that certain private health facilities in the state prioritize profits over providing proper care to subscribers of the scheme.

He urged health facilities to administer the appropriate medications and prioritize the well-being of all Deltans and scheme subscribers.

“Nonchalance in any health facility is like throwing stones in a marketplace; you never know who it might hit," Comrade Oyowe advised, emphasizing that every patient deserves quality care.

Despite these criticisms, Comrade Oyowe praised the health workers and facilities that have maintained professionalism, thereby contributing to the success of the scheme.

His concerns arise as the Delta State Government continues its significant investments in the healthcare sector, with the Contributory Health Insurance Scheme as a key initiative.

By addressing the attitude of some health workers, the state government can ensure that the scheme reaches its full potential and delivers quality healthcare to residents. However, failure to address these issues could jeopardize the program’s success and damage the government's image.
